About us

At Zahel, wine has been a family affair from the very beginning. Even though the winery and the Heurigen has grown over the years, we have remained a family business to this day.

Philosophy

A family affair right from the start

Thinking ahead

Richard Zahel continues to lovingly look after the vineyards and the traditional Heuriger. Son Valentin supports his father in the winery and daughter Franziska is responsible for creative tasks and, together with son Florian, for the Heurigen.

Family business

Together with a small, fine team, they ensure that the traditional business continues to grow and is successful. A very small family business has become a somewhat larger family business. However, we have remained true to the craft, nature and the Wiener Gemischter Satz to this day.

Family

Vienna's Gemischter Satz is now on everyone's lips, and Richard deserves much of the credit. Around 30 years ago, he was the first to recognize this special wine's potential. Today, he tends to the vineyards and runs the family business's second mainstay, the wine tavern, with his wife, Cornelia.

Richard Zahel

Cornelia was born in 1965 and married Richard in 1999. After raising their children — Franziska, Florian, and Valentin — she began helping her husband at the wine tavern. She is now the heart and soul of the business, supporting her children and husband. In 2019, she realized her dream of baking organic sourdough bread every day with love. Everything is produced in-house, which remains very important to her.

Cornelia Zahel

Valentin successfully completed his studies at the viticulture school in Klosterneuburg and is now following in his father's footsteps. In the future, he will gradually learn how to run the estate and eventually take over.

Franziska Zahel

Florian Zahel was born in 1999 and is the middle child of three. After graduating from secondary school, he attended the Koch und Tourismusschule am Judenplatz (Cooking and Tourism School), where he was able to pursue his passion for cooking. Since 2020, he has been the junior chef and is responsible for new and innovative dishes. He is passionate about bringing traditional Viennese cuisine into the modern age.

Florian Zahel

Irmhilde Zahel was born in 1932 and is the mother of Richard Zahel. She independently managed the 1.5-hectare vineyard and wine tavern, which had eight tables. In 1989, her son, Richard, took over the family business. Since then, she has been the heart of the company. To this day, she continues to support us with her advice and decades of experience.

History

A look at our history

Family business

Until around 30 years ago, the winery and Heuriger had less than one hectare of vineyards and just four wine tables. In 1989, Richard Zahel decided to hang up his racing shoes and dedicate himself to viticulture instead. In the same year, Wiener Gemischter Satz appeared on the Zahel labels for the first time. A lot has happened since then. Today we cultivate 35 hectares of vineyards in all of the city's vineyards. A new cellar, new wines and many small innovations have been added.

The phases of further processing

It's the little things that make the difference'
It's not just the grape, the vintage, the terroir, but also the decisions, the people, the actions that make the difference in the production of our wine.
